EUROPEAN UNION GRANTS ECU 6 MILLION TO PROTECT ENVIRONMENT IN SINAI

Europe Environment, November, 1994

The European Union has granted ECU 6 million to a development project for the Saint Catherine nature reserve in the southern Sinai. According to the European Commission, the project falls into the framework of the Egyptian Government's policy of protecting natural resources and areas of cultural riches of fundamental value to the country's economy. The project aims to integrate the Saint Catherine nature reserve, where a famous Greek-Orthodox monastery is to be found, into the protected sector in the Southern Sinai as a whole, and to undertake the necessary measures for the protection of the region.
