NUCLEAR ENERGY: ELEVENTH HOUR FOR EURATOM-US AGREEMENT

Summary: Negotiations between the European Union and the United States over trade and cooperation in nuclear materials are reaching a crucial stage. The EU's Foreign Affairs Council on December 19 confirmed and renewed the negotiating mandate it originally gave to the European Commission over two years ago - when the talks started. But time is running out. If no new Agreement is concluded in the coming weeks, trans-Atlantic nuclear cooperation is likely to be interrupted in early 1996, when the current arrangements expire. And if an agreement continues to prove elusive during 1995, the consequence could be serious long-term disruption to international trade in highly enriched uranium, with significant disadvantages for European nuclear research and industry, warn EU...
