BIOTECHNOLOGY: MEPS TO RESUME DEBATE ON LEGAL PROTECTION OF INVENTIONS

Summary:
At its next plenary session from July 14 to 18, the European Parliament will be examining in first reading the European Commission's amended proposal for a Directive on the legal protection of biotechnology inventions. In all but a few details, the new proposal is broadly similar to the joint text that emerged from the Parliament/Council of Ministers conciliation talks and was rejected by the Parliament in March 1995 on ethical grounds. Striking an early blow, the small farmers' organisation, the European Farmers' Coordination, has written to MEPs urging them to vote against any amendment supporting the patenting of living matter.
