MUNICIPALITIES AND REGIONS CALL FOR MORE EFFECTIVE COLLABORATION ON WASTE MANAGEMENT.

Following a seminar staged in Brussels on October 4 and 5 by the Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR) and attended by almost eighty delegates from 23 European countries, the organisation's Environment Committee has called on Community institutions and in particular the European Commission to develop programmes that will enable local and regional authorities to tackle the problem of waste management in association with other sectors.

The Committee expresses support for new schemes such as the European initiative for minimising waste, and the creation of a support fund for national initiatives in this area.
