CONSULTATION ON COMMUNITY'S FUTURE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY.

The European Commission issued a consultation paper on 28 March designed to help in drafting a "Community strategy on sustainable development" in time for the Gothenburg Summit on 15-16 June, in accordance with the request from EU Heads of State and Government at the Helsinki European Council in 1999.
The paper singles out six important trends that pose a threat to sustainable development in the EU - climate change; potential threats to public health; increasing pressure on some vital natural resources; poverty and social exclusion; ageing population; congestion and pollution from current patterns of mobility.
