RETAIL TRADE: MEPS ENDORSE SALES PROMOTION REGULATION.

The European Commission proposes through its proposal for a sales promotion Regulation to facilitate the free movement of goods and services for the benefit of consumers and small firms. It argues that the Member States currently authorise various forms of promotion, depriving consumers of the benefits of transboundary transparency in prices as a result of electronic commerce and the introduction of the Euro.

Whilst recognising the need to end the fragmentation created by conflicting national rules, Parliament emphasised the need to ensure that European rules simultaneously protect consumers and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
