ITALY WARNED OVER BIOFUELS DIRECTIVE.

The European Commission decided on 28 June to send an ultimatum to Italy (a reasoned opinion - the final stage prior to action before the Court of Justice) regarding implementation of the Directive on the promotion of biofuels (2003/30/EC). Rome stands accused of failing to justify its target of 1% market share for biofuels in 2005.

This is significantly less than the European target of 2% set in the Directive. The Commission will, meanwhile, pursue action before the Court over Italy's failure to submit a report for 2005. Athens has likewise failed to submit a report and will therefore receive a final ultimatum.
