CONSUMERS : GERMANY TO PURSUE DEBATE ON CONSUMER CREDIT.

Germany, which will take up the EU Presidency on 1 January 2007, has pledged to 'build on the current dynamic' to break the deadlock in negotiations on the proposal for a directive aiming to harmonise consumer credit in the EU. It hopes to do so without awaiting an impact study from the European Parliament, expected next spring. "We cannot suspend our discussions until then," says the German delegation.
This dynamic' stems from the intense efforts of the Finnish EU Presidency, which finally opted not to present its compromise text to the Competitiveness Council on 4 December, having failed to secure a qualified majority in the context of the Committee of Permanent Representatives (Coreper).
