ENERGY : EU INAUGURATES FIRST CONCENTRATING SOLAR POWER PLANT.

The European Commission has announced the inauguration of the first commercial-scale Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) plant in Europe. Investment in the PS10 solar plant amounted to 35 million, with 5 million coming from the EU's Fifth Framework Programme for Research. Situated near Seville (Spain), the project was initiated in July 2001 and is one of a set of solar electric power generation plants in the same area with a total capacity of more than 300 MW by 2013.

This first PS10 solar plant in Seville, with a capacity of 11 MW, can produce enough electricity for a population of 10,000. Over a period of a year, this will avoid CO2 emissions of some 16,000 tonnes. The PS10 project produces electricity thanks to 624 movable mirrors (heliostats) of 120 m2 surface...
