CONSUMERS : DEBATE RUNS UP AGAINST THE IDEA OF TOTAL HARMONISATION'.
Europe Environment, April, 2007
Debate over the review of the EU consumer acquis risks to run up against the key issue set forth by the green paper of 8 February: ie the extent of total harmonisation that Commissioner for Consumer Protection Meglena Kuneva is aiming to achieve.
During a public hearing held on 10 April at the European Parliament, the commissioner reminded that the goal of the process was to ensure that by 2013 all European citizens would be able to buy anywhere under the same protection, and also that companies would be able to sell anywhere according to the same rules. If, at the end of the public consultation open until 15 May, statutory intervention is deemed necessary, the commissioner will place her proposals on the table as early as 2008.
