CONSUMERS : CONTROVERSY IS CONTINUING OVER CONSUMER CREDIT.

Progress is slow in the debate over maximum harmonisation of consumer credit in the EU. However, the debate should pick up on 26 April following an impact study published by the European Parliament. This document appears to be sceptical about the effect the draft directive could have on stimulating cross-border trade of these credits, while guaranteeing a high degree of consumer protection. This does not discourage the European Parliament from making headway with this proposal that has been on the table since 2002. In 2005, the European Commission had proposed a modified version that incorporated 108 amendments out of the 152 voted during the first EP reading.
