TRANSPORT COUNCIL : MINISTERS REACH POLITICAL AGREEMENT ON MARITIME SAFETY.

Maritime issues were topping the agenda at the 7 June session of the Council of Transport Ministers in Luxembourg. The ministers dealt primarily with the Erika III Package relating to maritime safety. Three political agreements were adopted on this package: on proposals for directives relating to Community vessel traffic monitoring and information systems (amendment of Directive 2002/59/EC), port state control (overhaul of Directive 95/21/EC) and investigations to be carried out following accidents (amendment of Directives 1999/35/EC and 2002/59/EC). The Council also took note of a progress report on a proposal for a regulation on the liability of carriers of passengers by sea and inland waterways in the event of accidents.
