PROTECTION OF THE MARINE ENVIRONMENT.

The Council, on 23 July, adopted a common position on the draft directive on the protection of the marine environment. This directive is the legislative element proposed by the European Commission to implement the thematic strategy for the protection and conservation of the marine environment, itself considered to be the environmental pillar of the future European sea policy.

The directive is intended to create a framework for the protection of the marine environment, to prevent its deterioration and to restore damaged areas. It foresees the drawing up and implementation of national plans to achieve or maintain a "good ecological level" for our seas by 2021.
