CONSUMERS : TWO MONTHS TO EVALUATE TOY SAFETY CONTROLS.

Over the next two months, the EU's Consumer Protection Commissioner Meglena Kuneva will examine control procedures within the EU with regard to potentially dangerous imported products. US toy giant, Mattel, meanwhile, has just recalled toys made in China again.

On 5 September, Kuneva's spokesperson did not rule out the possibility of the Commission banning the importing of questionable Chinese products if Peking does not act to improve its safety standards by the end of October. At this stage, however, she said, "we do not favour banning products, we would prefer to work with the Chinese" Consumer safety will not be compromised, insisted her spokesperson, calling for consumers to be "vigilant".
