EU/US/CHINA : KUNEVA URGES WASHINGTON TO TIGHTEN TOY SAFETY REGIME.

The US has been urged by EU Consumer Protection Commissioner Meglena Kuneva to beef up its system for ensuring that dangerous toys do not get onto the market. In Washington for a three-day visit, Kuneva was especially keen that the US administration share more information on dangerous products with the EU. Commenting on recent product recalls by US toymaker Mattel, she said on 4 October that "I had to call Mattel and ask them what was going on. What we need to have is a well-structured US authority for sharing information. We should not just rely on the goodwill of the company".
