ENERGY : COMMISSION CLEARS NUCLEAR JOINT VENTUREaATMEA.

The European Commission cleared, on 30 October, the creation of a joint venture between the French nuclear company AREVA NP and Japan's Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI). The joint venture, ATMEA, is specialised in designing and manufacturing steam generation units ( nuclear islands') for nuclear power plants. The nuclear islands' provide steam for the conventional island' to produce electricity through turbines and generators. The Commission reasons that AREVA NP and MHI are geographically complementary. Additionally, the new joint venture, ATMEA, located in Paris, as well as its parent companies, will still have worldwide competitors such as GE-Hitachi Nuclear Energy and Toshiba-Westinghouse as well as face competition from local manufacturers such as...
