FISHERIES : EU TO PAY FOR 2007 BLUEFIN TUNA QUOTA OVERSHOOT.

Though it had to accept paying compensation for exceeding its fishing quotas, the European Commission says it is satisfied with the results of the annual meeting of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) organised in Antalya (Turkey). This session closed on 16 November with a set of decisions, including on the continuation of the bluefin tuna recovery plan adopted in 2006, on the total allowable catches (TAC) for 2008 and on reinforcing control measures for this fish.
The recovery plan for bluefin tuna in the Mediterranean and the North-East Atlantic for a duration of 15 years will be continued, but the delegates have planned the review to be based on new scientific advice which will be available at the end of 2008. They...
