CHEMICAL INDUSTRY : AKZO NOBEL BUY OF ICI WINS CONDITIONAL APPROVAL.

The proposed purchase of British company Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) by the Dutch company Akzo Nobel could pose serious competition concerns relating to the markets for decorative coatings in the UK, Ireland and Belgium and on the EEA market for industrial adhesives for engineered wood. Under these conditions, the European Commission decided, on 14 December, to authorise this proposal but subject to commitments to divest activities in the UK, Ireland and Belgium as well as a shareholding in the adhesives manufacturer Purbond AG.
