EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT : POTTERING OUTLINES FIVE PRIORITIES TO EUROPEAN COUNCIL.

Now that the Charter of Fundamental Rights has been proclaimed and the Treaty of Lisbon signed, the president of the European Parliament wants to concentrate on priorities for 2008. At the European Council on 14 December in Brussels, Hans-Gert Pottering (EPP-ED, Germany) described his five priorities to Europe's leaders.

The EP president first mentioned enlargement of the Schengen area, which comes into force on 21 December (March 2008 for airports). For Pottering, this abolition of border controls has "great symbolic importance" because it demonstrates that "Europe's former divisions have been overcome". Security may not be neglected, however.
