EU/US : CARBON TAX DEBATE IGNITING ON BOTH SIDES OF THE ATLANTIC.

Debate is intensifying over whether a tax should be imposed on goods imported from countries that have not mandated cuts in their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. EU Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas, in Washington on 7 March for climate change talks with top US officials, told Europolitics that "I sincerely believe a carbon tax will not be needed on imports because we will have an international agreement. If we do not, we will review the situation in 2011". US Trade Representative Susan Schwab, on 6 March, slammed the tax idea, predicting it would unleash a trade war.
Schwab's remarks were made at the US Senate where two bills are being considered that require a tax on imports to be imposed in 2020 if there is no globally binding treaty. "This legislation...
