ENERGY : PIEBALGS: WIND POWER KEY TO FUTURE EU ENERGY MIX.

Wind energy could ensure some 12% of the target set by the EU to bring up to 20% the share of energy from renewable sources by 2020. According to EU Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs, who gave a speech on 31 March on the occasion of the opening of the European Wind Energy Conference in Brussels, the sector has the means, and the regulatory proposals put on the table by the European Commission on 23 January 2008 should give it the necessary political and legal support.

The commissioner reiterated that according to the road map defined for renewable energies in January, 34% of electricity consumption from renewable sources could include up to 12% of wind-generated electricity, of which one third would be produced by offshore installations.
