ALERT ON UKRAINIAN SUNFLOWER OIL.

Europe Environment, May, 2008

A total of 40,000 tonnes of sunflower oil from Ukraine shipped to the EU have been purposely contaminated with hydrocarbons, specified, on 28 April, the European Commission, which was awaiting further information from Kiev. "Mineral oil was purposely added" to the cargo of seven vessels bound for France, then distributed in France, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain, said an expert.

The UK could be concerned from a trade perspective. The EU alert system was notified, on 25 February, and the Commission urgently requested a recommendation from the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA).
