VERHEUGEN ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT.

The EU's Industry Commissioner, Gunter Verheugen, announced in an interview with the French economic magazine Capital that he would end his 40-year political career and retire at the end of his term, in autumn 2009. The European Commission's vice-president, who will turn 64 next week, intends to retire from political life and dedicate himself to writing and teaching.
He does not plan to take on another eminent career in the private sector by giving a company the benefit of his broad experience. Verheugen, furthermore, gives a mixed judgement on his work in Brussels within Jose Manuel Barroso's team.
