MARITIME POLICY : EUROPE MARKS FIRST MARITIME DAY.

On a proposal from the European Commission, the EU celebrated, on 20 May, the first European Maritime Day(1). The launch ceremony was held in Strasbourg and included the signing of a joint declaration by Janez Jan a, prime minister of Slovenia, for the Council, Hans-Gert Pottering, president of the European Parliament, and Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso.
The day coincided with the European Parliament's vote on the Integrated Maritime Policy, based on a report by Willi Piecyk (PES, Germany). The report stresses the possibilities offered by the maritime sector in terms of innovation, research, the environment, biodiversity, economic development and employment.
