EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT : MEPS VOTE ON PROTECTING ENVIRONMENT THROUGH CRIMINAL LAW.

The European Parliament's plenary session, running from 19 to 22 May in Strasbourg, includes a vote at first reading on protection of the environment through criminal law and debates on the situation in Burma (Myanmar) and China.

Members vote under the co-decision procedure on a report by Hartmut Nassauer (EPP-ED, Germany) on protection of the environment through criminal law. If the draft directive concerned is approved, illegal behaviour that results in serious damage to the environment will become a criminal offence in all the member states and criminal penalties may be imposed to enforce the new EU legislation. Parliament and the Council are expected to come to agreement at first reading. The report was debated on 19 May.
