IEA MINISTERS IN FAVOUR OF NEW ENERGY TAXES

Energy Ministers from 23 member countries of the International Energy Agency (IEA) expressed their concern on June 3 with the increase in CO2 emissions, considering that it was time to introduce taxes for polluters to pay. IEA experts reckon that CO2 emissions should increase by nearly 50% in the world by the year 2010 because of the rapid rise in energy consumption in industrialising countries.

Carbon dioxide emissions look set to increase by 15% in the 24 industrialised countries of the OECD between 1990 and the year 2000. IEA Ministers recognise that greater effort is necessary and that where necessary and practicable, external production costs and energy use should be passed on in the end-user price.
