NUCLEAR ENERGY: OECD COUNTRIES FACE SHORTAGE OF QUALIFIED STAFF

Summary:

The countries of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) must immediately start preparing for the eventual replacement of skilled workers in their nuclear industries in order to avoid a shortage of qualified staff at the turn of the century, according to a report by the Nuclear Energy Agency published in late July. A drop in orders for nuclear plants, a predicted acceleration of retirement and the industry's poor image in the eyes of students leave nuclear power open to a shortage of engineers and researchers.
