Speaking at the annual conference of the Japanese Atomic Industry Forum in Hiroshima on April 13, Hans Blix, Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) argued the case for nuclear energy, stressing the dangers of noxious emissions from fossil fuels. In a communiquC issued from IAEA headquarters in Vienna, Dr Blix underlined that "even the most optimistic forecasts for the year 2020 point to an increase in the use of fossil energy sources, with the consequent rise in carbon dioxide emission levels". The IAEA chief warned that "in basing three quarters of our energy needs on fossil sources today, we are intefering with the ecological balance of the world".
