MOTOR FUELS: PUTTING A TIGER IN YOUR TANK WITHOUT PRODUCING OZONE

Summary: The European Commission is due, on November 16, to unveil "Stage II" of the programme for combating emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The draft Directive seeks to establish systems for recovering petrol vapours emitted when vehicles are being refuelled at service stations. European motorists filling up their tanks emit 200,000 tonnes of VOCs a year (137,000 stations in the European Union), and these are powerful photochemical oxidizing agents that contribute to the creation of tropospheric ozone. Germany, Luxembourg, Austria and Sweden have already adopted the "Stage II" regulations.
