AGIP, of Italy, and BRITISH GAS, the privatised and controversial UK gas utility, are each acquiring 42.5% stakes in a consortium to develop the Karachaganak natural gas field in the Uralsk region of North-West Kazakhstan. The other signatory to the agreement was GAZPROM, the Russian gas supplier, which will have the remaining 15%. There has recently been a decline in output from the Karachaganak field which has recoverable reserves of 800 billion m3 of gas and 330 million tonnes of oil. The latest deal provides that the output will be shipped to GAZPROM s Orenburg processing plant, before being sent into the Russian oil and gas export system.
