LITHUANIA "CAN'T AFFORD TO CLOSE" NUCLEAR POWER PLANT

The European Parliament's delegation which visited the Lithuanian nuclear power plant at Ignalina on November 21 expressed concern over safety of the plant. The MEPs urged the Government to opt for early closure - but accepted that Lithuania's heavy energy dependence on the plant, for domestic power supply and for export earnings, and that alternative sources must be found. Storage of waste is a particular problem, over and above operating safety concerns, the delegation learnt. The European Parliament is likely to be asked by the delegation to back a call for an international action plan to provide financial assistance for close-down, waste disposal, and replacement.
