ENERGY EFFICIENCY: HOT TEMPERS IN THE REFRIGERATION BUSINESS

Summary: European household equipment manufacturers announced their opposition to current proposals to phase in energy efficiency standards for refrigerators and freezers on February 21. The European Parliament and the Council of Ministers are currently discussing a draft Directive, proposed by the Commission in December 1994, which would require refrigerators to comply with tough energy savings standards in order to be permitted on the market. The industry feels that a voluntary negotiated approach would be far better, or in the worst case a strictly limited Directive.
