In this third and final part of a series of extracts from the European Commission Directorate-General III's Panorama of EU Industry, Europe Energy presents below the chapters on solid fuels and nuclear fuels. The slide in EU production of hard coal appears, at least for the medium term, to be inexorable. Governments are coming under increasing pressure to reduce subsidies, which is likely to lead to drops in production.

Demand is also expected to drop further, partly due to the rise of gas, and partly due to environmental considerations. Nevertheless, in the long term, coal may yet see a recovery.
