NUCLEAR ENERGY OUTPUT SET TO RISE IN OECD COUNTRIES

The Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) has predicted that production of electricity from nuclear power will rise up to the year 2010 in countries belonging to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). From 1.994 terawatt/hours (billion kilowatt/hours) in 1996, output is projected to rise to 2.259 terawatt/hours in 2010, an increase of 1.7%. However, the share of nuclear power in total electricity production will fall from 24.9 to 22.2%. Electricity demand should continue to grow at about 1.7% annually beyond the year 2000, according to the NEA's annual survey of developments and projections of nuclear generation, installed capacities and associated fuel cycle services, also known as the "Brown Book".
