BAYER AND ELECTRABEL CELEBRATE 25 YEARS WITH A NEW COGENERATION UNIT

To celebrate 25 years of partnership, German chemicals and pharmaceuticals giant Bayer and Belgian power utility Electrabel have just signed an agreement to jointly build a combined heat and power (CHP) unit on the Bayer Antwerp NV site, on the right bank of the river Scheldt, at a cost of 1.3 billion Belgian Francs.

The new unit, which should be ready next year, will fit in and complement the existing facilities and will be powered mainly by clean natural gas. The CHP unit will have one production line fitted with a generator providing a capacity of 40 MW and a steam recovery boiler flexible enough to produce between 58 and 100 tonnes of steam per hour. Bayer will then make direct use of the electricity and steam produced by the unit in its production processes....
