OECD NUCLEAR ELECTRICITY OUTPUT PREDICTED TO RISE 0.9% A YEAR UNTIL 2010

The amount of electricity generated by nuclear means in the member countries of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) should continue to increase by 0.9% each year at least until 2010. If this rate of increase, predicted by the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) on June 5, is sustained, the figure of 2,007 terawatt hours of nuclear-generated electricity produced in 1997 will rise to 2,244 TWh in twelve years' time. However, these statistics are somewhat misleading since the rise in nuclear-generated electricity relates to the fact that electricity production as a whole is on the rise in OECD countries and in fact the percentage produced by nuclear power stations is ever decreasing.
