BP Amoco is to fit 200 service stations around the world with solar power panels, the most ambitious project of its kind ever undertaken, according to BP France. Solar cells will supply electricity to all new service stations in Australia, Austria, Great Britain, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland.
Solar cells will also be installed in prototype stations in France and the United States. During the first phase of the programme, 400 solar panels will be installed on the canopies of 200 stations in eleven countries. The USD50 million project is expected to generate a total of 3.5 megawatts of electricity, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by up to 3,500 tonnes per year, according to BP Amoco.
