ABB Alstom Power will soon axe a total of 10,000 jobs, announced Chairman Claude Darmon on February 29. The French trade union CGT had made public a similar figure a few weeks earlier, but the management refused to either confirm or deny the allegation. The multinational is the result of a merger between the Franco-British Alstom and the Swiss-Swedish company Asea Brown Boveri (ABB).

Trade unionists declared that they intend to take the firm to court for not respecting the European Works Council Directive (94/45/EC), which requires employers to inform their employees of the consequences of restructuring 'in good time'.
