NUCLEAR POWER: EUROPEAN COMMISSION SUPPORTS NUCLEAR POWER IN EU'S FUTURE ENERGY MIX.

The European Commission is currently conducting a review of energy policy this year to take account of two key factors - the Kyoto Protocol commitments to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and the future enlargement of the Community.Roberto Salvarani, Head of the Environment Unit in the Commission's Directorate-General for Transport and Energy, told the energy policy workshop that the EU needed to meet its targets under the Kyoto Protocol, achieve sustainable development and move towards cleaner energy sources.He also mentioned the need to maintain security of energy supply, but pointed out that the Community's imports of oil and gas were from unstable regions of the world.
