In her intervention, Nuala Ahern pointed out that the irregularities revealed by the press at the mixed oxide fuel (MOX) facility at Sellafield were not the first, and wondered why they had been missed by Euratom inspectors. She believes it is now vital to have harmonisation of minimum safety levels across the Community.

This point of view was shared by Eryl McNally (PES, United Kingdom), who noted that nuclear power is the only sector bereft of any harmonisation, and also by Graham Watson (ELDR, United Kingdom) who called for the introduction of high common standards.
