GAZPROM AND FOUR EUROPEAN GAS UTILITIES DISCUSS NEW PIPELINE PROJECT.

Russian gas giant Gazprom met leading natural gas companies in France, Germany and Italy in Paris on 29 August to resume talks on building a new gas pipeline between Russia and Europe. Gaz de France, Ruhrgas and Wintershall of Germany plus Italy's Snam (ENI group) all attended the talks with Gazprom on the pipeline that would pass through Belarus and Poland, skirting around Ukraine.

The five partners are still weighing up the pros and cons of the project and no decision has yet been taken on whether to go ahead. They have formed a study group to discuss the technical, economic and financial aspects of the pipeline project. The pipeline would have a capacity of 25-30 billion cubic metres per year and would by-pass Ukraine which Gazprom has accused of siphoning off...
