CONTROVERSY OVER BULGARIA'S NUCLEAR POWER STATION.

The European Parliament will vote in Strasbourg, on December 15, on a report on Bulgaria's state of preparedness for accession to the EU (the Van Orden report) which includes a request to extend the operation of the nuclear power station in Kozludy (Bulgaria). According to the European Green Party, in a letter addressed to the president of the European parliament, this constitutes "a clear violation of the accession Treaty signed by the Republic of Bulgaria and the 25 member states". The Treaty specifies that units 3 and 4 of the Kozloduy nuclear power station must be closed by 2006 for safety reasons.
