ENERGY : EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT DIVIDED ON THE QUESTION OF NUCLEAR POWER.

Members of the European Parliament, during their plenary session in Strasbourg on 14 December, presented the European Commission with their understanding of the Green Paper on energy policy. Not surprisingly, a large majority (479 votes for and 16 against) requested, in a resolution prepared by Eluned Morgan (PES, UK), more restrictive targets for CO2 emission reduction (by 30% by 2020), the use of renewable energy sources with global targets (25% renewable energy by 2020 and 50% by 2040) and sectoral targets (electricity, heating/air conditioning and biofuels).

MEPs were, however, very divided on the question of nuclear energy and the amendments in its favour were rejected by a small majority. This implies that the amendment setting the target of 60% low carbon...
