EU/US : SENATE PUSHES CO2 CAPTURE AND STORAGE.

Just when splits over climate policy threatened to overshadow the EU-US Summit on 30 April, the United States Senate proposed cutting CO2 emissions from coal power plants through carbon capture and storage (CCS). At a recent hearing in Washington, Republican and Democrat Senators enthusiastically backed a bill that would get the CCS ball rolling by first finding out how much capacity the US has to store CO2 underground. The general view was that CCS kills two birds with one stone by allowing the US to use its coal reserves and thus become more energy independent, while at the same time helping combat global warming. Meanwhile, across the Atlantic, the European Commission is busy putting together its own regulatory and fundingframework for CCS.
