NATIONAL RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT : NEW SME INITIATIVE AIMS TO BIND TOGETHER NATIONAL PROGRAMMES.

Proposals are currently going through the final stages of preparation in the European Commission for a new research funding initiative aimed at addressing the present fragmentation between different national R&D programmes.

It is planned that the initiative, called Eurostars', will have a budget of 400 million during the period from 2007 to 2013, made up of 100 million from the EU's 7th Framework Research Programme and 300 million from participating member states. Its focus will be on providing support to near-market research carried out by small and medium-sized enterprises.
