STATE AID : GREENPEACE: COMMISSION HYPOCRITICAL ON COAL SUBSIDIES.

Greenpeace accused the European Commission of hypocrisy in phasing out subsidies for the dirty' coal sector. Earlier, on 21 May, the Commission published its report on state aid in the coal sector (see other article). The Commission recommended no changes to the current system of state aid that has been in place since the expiry of the European Coal and Steel Treaty in 2002. Eight member states granted some 4.1 billion in coal state aid in 2005, with Germany and Spain granting around 85% of the total. Other states granting aid are Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Hungary and the UK.
