The SME employers' association UEAPME voiced mixed feelings over the report by MEP Alejo Vidal-Quadras (EPP-ED, Spain) on the internal gas and electricity market. UEAPME believes MEPs have been "far too indulgent" towards energy giants. Even if Vidal-Quadras' own initiative report, adopted by the European Parliament on 10 July, calls for ownership unbundling and increased cooperation among EU energy regulators, MEPs were too confident of national watchdogs, according to UEAPME.
The report does not go far enough due to the weak wording on ownership unbundling. "Ownership unbundling is fundamental, but it must be done in a way that avoids the creation of private monopolies on the distribution side," argued UEAPME. "The optimal solution would be to keep energy...
