ELECTRICITY NETWORKS : SUMMER MONITORING OF NETWORKS SEEKS TO REDUCE RISK OF BLACKOUTS.

Fearing a repeat of extreme summer weather conditions, Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs proposed a specialised electricity network monitoring cell within the European Commission. The proposal was made at the Electricity Cross-Border Committee on 10 July. The committee, which brings together EU energy ministries and regulators, had examined the risk of repeat disturbances in electricity supply this summer. The committee also heard respective analyses of previous blackouts by the European Transmission System Operators (ETSO) and the European Regulators' Group for Electricity and Gas (ERGEG). The Commission points to "smaller scale" examples of disturbances already having taken place in southern Europe due to heat waves earlier this year.
