The Italian inventor who spearheaded the creation of global standards for digital audio and video, the Belgian virologist who gave hope to HIV patients and the Airbus team who made plane engines less noisy have all been nominated for the Inventor of the Year 2008 awards. The winners will be announced at the European Patent Forum in Ljubljana on 6 May.

The prize winners will be selected from among those researchers whose inventions were patented by the European Patent Office (EPO) and marketed between 1993 and 2002. The EPO and the European Commission announced, on 10 April, a total of 12 nominees in four categories: lifetime achievement, industry, SMEs/research institutes and non-European countries.
