COMPETITION : GDF FACES ANTI-TRUST PROBE AS DEBATE OVER GAS MARKET CONTINUES.

The European Commission announced, on 22 May, that it is opening a formal investigation into the French gas group GDF, suspected of uncompetitive practices in supply and imports. Although the EU services deny that there is a link, some point out that this decision comes shortly before a crucial meeting of energy ministers, which must give a verdict on the controversial directive on the opening of the gas market and the decoupling of production from transport.

The investigation focuses on behaviour which could have prevented or restricted competition on the markets for the supply of natural gas in France, specifies the Commission.
